History of the Longs, SC Area
This small community is located within the larger region that is known as the Grand Strand region. Longs is conveniently located within close range to the popular coastal community of North Myrtle Beach. Longs is located approximately 14 miles northwest of North Myrtle Beach.
The area around North Myrtle Beach has a history dating back nearly 10,000 years ago with the Native Americans. Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the Long Bay area was a resting place and part-time residence of the Winyaw and Waccamaw Indians who called the place Chicora, or "the land."
Longs was originally the home to a family of early settlers in the area known as the Long family. The prominent historical family was essential in the development of Horry County. The construction of many historic public buildings and can be attributed to the works of these early area settlers. The family took advantage of the area's inherit industry and moved into the construction and masonry industries with corporations such as JD Long Masonry and Long Enterprises stretching far along the east coast of the US.
Until the 1900s, the beaches of Horry County were virtually uninhabited due to the county's geographical inaccessibility but near the turn of the century, a timber company began developing the Myrtle Beach area as a resort.
